Earlier, during Fox Sports' coverage of Sunday's World Cup opener between Ecuador and host Qatar, studio host Rob Stone introduced the network's Qatar expert: social media influencer Harry Fa al Haroon. Not critical of Qatar, he calls himself Mr Q and is the founder of the website I Love Qatar.
Subsequently, Fox paid $425 million for the English-language rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the United States, with a show at Al Bayt Stadium, where the premiere will be played. The section, called Explore Qatar, is sponsored by the Qatar Foundation, which is run by members of the country's ruling family.
It could have transitioned naturally into one of the biggest stories of this World Cup: massive importssouth asian workerto Qatar to build most of the country's infrastructure. The working and living conditions of these workers have been heavily criticized by international human rights groups, who say that thousands have died building the World Cup stadiums in Qatar, a figure denied by the Qatari government.
But Fox viewers didn't hear anything, and probably didn't during the game. In a position that seems unique among World Cup broadcasters, Fox has chosen to pay little or no attention to the off-field controversies that have accompanied the event for over a decade.
The game airs on the Fox Sports 1 cable channel and the Fox over-the-air channel. Along with Fox News and other television and entertainment properties, they are owned by Fox Corporation, controlled by Rupert Murdoch.
"We think viewers come to Fox Sports during the World Cup to watch the biggest sporting event in the world," Fox executive David Neal said in an October interview.philadelphia investigator.
"They didn't come to us expecting us to be 'Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel' or 'E:60,'" Neal added, referring to investigative news programs on HBO and ESPN.
Fox will cover some of the thorny issues of the World Cup, Neal said, "whether a story affects the playing field, whether it affects competition in the tournament." .
With every World Cup and Olympics, broadcasters struggle to balance the promotional nature of broadcasting global sporting events with the journalistic responsibility of covering the dark side of sport. The issue has become increasingly important as the choice of host is often subject to allegations of bribery and bid rigging, and as authoritarian states, eager to improve their image, have becomesome of the fiercest or unique bidders.
While most broadcasters consider themselves news organisations, pay a lot of money for event rights and know that advertisers and some viewers, not to mention the sport's governing bodies, want nothing to do with stories of human rights abuses and corruption. But they generally try to cover a wider range of topics with varying degrees of involvement.

"You're never going to cover just one football game at the World Cup," said Bob Ley, who hosted ESPN's coverage of the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. World is culture, government, institutions and ways of life”.
Broadcasters have many incentives to go beyond the arena, Ley said, because big sporting events attract millions of viewers who aren't extreme sports fans. Telemundo Deportes "will cover geopolitics and other issues affecting the real game," wrote Telemundo Deportes president Ray Warren in an email from Qatar. The story is Telemundo's "main role", but he added that Telemundo reporters "do not and do not avoid relevant news coverage from the outside."
Telemundo averaged 2.06 million viewers per match for the 2018 World Cup, while Fox averaged 2.98 million.
Even as controversy erupted on Monday, Fox's coverage stood out compared to its rivals.

"FIFA is very committed to portraying the game in the right light," said announcer Ian Darke at the end of the match. He was talking about injury time and when the referee would blow the whistle to end England's crushing defeat.
