The Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury kick off their 2023 season just one week after meeting in a preseason game. That game was won by the Sparks 90-71.
The game came after some tough cuts from both sides. WNBA teams are kind of limited by small rosters, and the total number of teams is small, so after the WNBA draft and preseason, the team ends up releasing a lot of players. The Sparks fired point guard Crystal Bradford and forward Rezenda Gray on May 13, center Monica Zinano on May 15, and center Monica Zinano on May 16. Guard Carly Samuelson and forward Ray Burrell fired guard Yang Liwei on May 17.
